Coastal zones and plains, hills, mountains, rain forests and savannas make up Suriname's physical regions.Specifically, a physical region represents a distinct land form. Suriname's northernmost region is taken up by the country's more developed and populated coastal zone. Bordering this zone of sand and mud banks are the New and Old Coastal Plains of sandy ridges and clayey swamps. South of the plains are the rolling hills of swamps, Savannah grasslands and rain forests of the Zanderij formation. Even further south are the central mountain range and the vast Surinamese rain forest. Furthest south is the savanna grassland of the Sipaliwni Plain.
The Chihuahuan Desert of far-west Texas receives the least amount of rain, usually averaging less than 8 inches per year.
