As with most Commonwealth countries that have not changed their electoral laws from the basic principles of the UK, a general election must be held once every five years in Jamaica. However, they can be held early at the discretion of the Government, or if the Government loses parliamentary confidence and is forced into an early election. The 2011 general election was called a year early.
A general election is when all of the seats in the House of Commons come up for grabs. A by-election takes place in one constituency if its MP dies or resigns in between the general elections.

With the exception of Presidential election years when the Presidential Preference Primary is held in February in Tennessee, primaries are held in May and August of even numbered years.
If you want to become a member of parliament you have to have certain requirement. · You must be 18 or older · You must be a citizen of the UK, a commonwealth country or the Republic of Ireland · You must get at least 10 votes from the place she plans to run in · You must deposit 500 pounds. This is to stop people who are just doing it for a laugh so you only get it back if you get at least 5 per cent of the vote.
A federal government mandate can't last longer than five years. Canadian elections must be held at some point before five years is up, but there is no fixed interval. There is a law requiring a fixed interval of every four years, but the prime minister who initiated that law has already called an election outside it. Under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act (2011), a general election must occur five years after the previous election. Before the act, the Prime Minister decided on the date, as long as it was no longer than five years after the previous election.
An Irish parliament's term is 5 years, but an election can happen before that. Not all parliaments run their full term, so elections often happen sooner than that. There were 3 general elections in 18 months in the early 1980s.
We are having one and we have to have one. The UK must have a general election within five years of the last one. The last general election was in 2005 this being means the government have waited until the last possible year to have one. It is important to follow the rules strictly, since any weakness could be exploited by a would-be dictator.
