18 for Title 1 long guns (shotguns or rifles), 21 for handguns and NFA regulated items (machine guns, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, suppressors, destructive devices, etc). In NC, your chances of getting approved for an NFA permit are slim, unless you're an FFL holder with either a range or a gunsmithing practice. If you're in Wake, Johnston, or Cumberland countties, they won't approve NFA permits, period.
