The first European settlers (the Dutch) came to what is now New York in 1625 and they named it New Amsterdam. The English took control in 1664 and renamed it New York.

All the five boroughs -- Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island -- became one city in 1898.
