Rising 195.2 metres above the mountain summit,
The Black Mountain Tower (also known as The Telstra Tower) is 195.2m tall.
I assume you mean why is telstra tower where it is and why in canberra altogether? There used to be a smaller tv arial ontop of Black Mountain however it needed to be upgraded to cope with Canberra's rapid expansion. So Telstra tower was built as a telcom. tower and as a landmark attraction too. Why in Canberra though? Because that is where it was needed.
Construction of the Telstra Tower in Canberra began in 1975. The tower was officially opened to the public in 1980. It was built to improve telecommunications and provide a tourist attraction with panoramic views of the city and surrounding landscape.
