The Sierra Nevada mountain range was formed primarily through a combination of tectonic activity and volcanic processes. Approximately 40 million years ago, the region experienced significant tectonic uplift due to the subduction of the Farallon Plate beneath the North American Plate. This uplift, along with volcanic activity, contributed to the formation of the range's distinctive granite peaks. Erosion from glaciers and rivers further shaped the landscape, resulting in the Sierra Nevada we see today.
