New Jersey wasn't settled until 1660. The Dutch lost the colony in 1664 when the British took it over. The land was inexpensive and settlers were allowed religious and political freedom. As a result it became more diverse than other colonies. 95% farmed or had diaries and it grew to 100,000 people. Before the revolution about 1/3 supported the rebels, 1/3 stayed loyal to the crown, and 1/3 were neutral . In 1776 the state declared its independence and joined the side of the patriot cause . More battles were fought in New Jersey than any other state.
