What were your expectations? You may not have been acting as if they were real people, or with the same courtesy as you do at home. If you are friendly and look people in the eye, and that goes for anywhere, you will have an interesting time. Having to live with tourists with unrealistic expectations does create a certain tension. I have had people go out of their way to make my time enjoyable.
