In fact in many places around the world it's taught that there is only one single "American" continent. This "North America" and "South America" concept is just a definition coming from the United States, as to clarify the whole continent from the USA, which is commonly known as "America".

I guess since our country's name is The United States of America, it is just simpler to say America and call its citizens Americans.
