"Kanakas", as they were called (now a derogatory term), came from over 80 different Pacific Islands, and provided cheap labour for the cane fields. Although underpaid and undervalued, they were excellent workers, who did not tire as easily as white cutters, and they certainly did not complain about their working conditions.
