One legal requirement for Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) is that they must be U.S. Coast Guard approved for use on recreational boats. It is also required that there is one wearable PFD of appropriate size for each person onboard the vessel. Additionally, PFDs must be readily accessible and in good condition, with no signs of wear or damage.
Generally, those 16 years old and younger must, by law, wear a PFD. There are other laws that vary from state to state that regulate the number and use of PFD's, so you should refer to the published boating regulations for your state. Louisiana : All boaters or passengers under 16 years of age must be wearing their PFD while onboard a vessel that is 26 feet or less in length while the vessel is underway.
