Alimony, or spousal support, can be awarded to a lower-earning or non-working spouse during or after a divorce, depending on various factors such as the length of the marriage, financial needs, and the recipient's ability to support themselves. The court has discretion in determining the amount and duration of alimony, and it can be temporary or permanent.
