The population in Dublin and its surrounding areas has risen for lots of reasons. Dublin is the capital and largest city in Ireland, so people come to live in and near it in search of work. When the Irish economy was at its strongest, more people were coming to Ireland to live and work. Many of them would have settled in and around Dublin.
The major population areas are around the largest cities. Dublin is the largest city and a large amount of people live in or around Dublin. Cork, on the south coast is another large city with a surrounding area of population. The west of Ireland is generally lowly populated, but Galway is the main urban area and so it has a larger population in and around it than other parts of the west. In the north, Belfast and Derry are the two largest population areas. Overall, more people live in the eastern half of the country than in the western half, due in part to Dublin being on the east coast and also that the quality of land is poor in the west causing many people to migrate to the greater Dublin area.
