Mt Aso is located in Japan on the southern Island of Kyushu. It's a beautiful place famous for it's hot springs, its caldera and its horse meat. The horse is usually served raw like sashimi, that is called basashi. On Mt Aso itself, you can get grilled horse at the little strip shopping mall near the crater. Both are quite tasty, but grilled horse can be quite tough. Aso's caldera is quite large and is very impressive as you ascend to the summit of one side and gaze accross the valley to the other side of the caldera. However, It is not the largest caldera in the world(as you may see on some other sites). Over 40 years ago it was considered the largest, but now it would struggle to be in the top 25(check the USGS and a host of other reliable web sites) Toba, Yellowstone and La Garita are hundreds or thousands of times larger than Aso. Aso is a great weekend getaway, but be aware... It is a VERY active volcano, and as such the summit is often closed due to gas emissions and small eruptions. Hope this helps, Eric in Japan
