Nara is in the island of Kinki. It was founded in 710 on the Yamalto Plains and is known as Heijo- kyo meaning "citadel of peace". It was the first capital city. There are many things to see in Nara. It has many Buddhist Temples such as Horyu- ji. It was built in 670 AD and is to the east of Nara. You can see the Great Buddha. It is one of the largest bronze statues. It weighs 437 tonnes and stands 16 metres tall. It was made in 746 AD. Over the years, earthquakes have knocked its head off but another has been made. You can find it in the Todai-ji temple. In August there is a candle festival known as Toka-e. It starts on the 6th of August and concludes on the 15th. It goes for about 10 days and it is a magnificent sight. More than 7,500 candles light up the sky at night.
