It depends what you mean by 'sparse'.

In Population: Alaska is probably space because it is a very expensive place to live and the winter climate is not appealing to everyone.

In Towns: Many parts of Alaska's landscape are inhospitable tundra and swamps that are literally impossible to build on.

In Landscape: The tundra of Alaska is very empty. Many plants cannot grow in the acidic soil so there are few trees.

But in many ways Alaska is not sparse. It is very rich in resources, employment opportunities, and financial state status.
