Upon gaining independence it united with the smaller British Trust Territory of Southern Cameroon and joined the Commonwealth. This it does have constitutional links to Britain, in part.

Cameroon. This is not correct. Part of Cameroon was under British rule between 1919 and 1960. British Cameroon was in tow parts: one part joined Nigeria, while the other part joined Cameroon on independence.

In general, such organizations are created to discourage other countries from attacking any one member country.
