Yes. Iwo Jima (硫黄島, Iōtō) was officially a Japanese territory prior to the battle that took place there. Following the war, the island was occupied by the United States until 1968 when it was returned to Japan. The island has had no civilian population since 1944 and no one resides on the island with the exception of a small population of servicemen at a Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force base.
