Iraqi Kurdistan continues to improve. Erbid (which the Kurds call Hawler) is a very beautiful and modern city. Across the Turkish border, the area is poorer, but still quite beautiful. It is recommended that you travel very safely if you go to Kurdistan because of the PKK and other types of unrest or violence.
