It used to be a one party state approximately 10 yrs after independence in October 1964. in 1990 after major election campaigns led by the movement for multi-party democracy pary the then president signed documents declaring Zambia a multi party nation. in 1991 this law went into effect and the third republic was born, the third republic meant that multiparty democracy was born and still exists in present day Zambia.
