There's really no such thing as a safe neighborhood or a dangerous neighborhood, in Manhattan, at least.

The same is true pretty much everywhere else, although maybe not to the same extent. Whenever I watch news reports or true crime shows, families of the victims are constantly saying, "I can't believe it happened here! This is a safe neighborhood!" and I always think, "How naive can you be?" Like, "Ooooh, I can't believe that crime can happen anywhere! I had no idea that criminals could travel! I thought criminals were quarantined in poor neighborhoods, by electric fences!"

There is no place on Earth where people are immune from crime, since criminals can drive, walk, or take the bus, just like the rest of us. And criminals don't generally want to rob people in poor neighborhoods, since poor people don't have much money. Rich people in nice neighborhoods make more lucrative targets.

But this is especially true in a place like Manhattan. Manhattan is tiny, and all parts of it are easily accessible by subway, bus, or on foot. Criminals don't have to stay in just one neighborhood. They can easily live in, say, Queens, yet take the subway to anywhere in Manhattan to rob people.

Not only that, but there aren't really any neighborhoods that are exclusively populated by rich people, or middle-class people, or poor people. One street will be lined with luxury condos, and the next street is nothing but decrepit tenement apartments. Sometimes luxury apartment buildings are located right NEXT to poor buildings, or right across the street from them!

Even the Upper East Side, which has always been considered the wealthiest neighborhood in the city, has middle-class and even working-class people living in it. In the last 25 years, the Upper West Side has become the second-wealthiest neighborhood in the city, but there are still plenty of middle-class and working-class people there.

My brother was mugged twice, and the first time he was mugged was on the Upper East Side, and the second time was on the Upper West Side. Since these are -- generally speaking -- the wealthiest neighborhoods, you might expect them to be the safest. But crime happens there, too. Like I said, crime happens everywhere.

Nobody who has lived in New York City for a long time, and knows Manhattan intimately, would ever tell you, "Oh, you have to stay out of this neighborhood" or "Don't ever travel above this street, or below this street" or whatever. It just doesn't work like that.

In short, Midtown is no more safe or dangerous than any other neighborhood. And since New York City is currently the safest major city in the U.S., I wouldn't worry too much, wherever you are.

The main thing to remember is, try not to look like a tourist. Don't wear a camera around your neck. If you wear good jewelery, or have fancy electronic gadgets, don't flash them. Keep them concealed. And walk at a brisk, purposeful pace, like you know where you're going and you've been there a hundred times.
