There Puerto Rican related to Mexican tamale and Venezuelan hallacas. Believed to have been made by Natives of Borican (Puerto Rico's native name) with mashed (masa) cassava, sweet potato, and squash. The "masa" is then filled with beans, nuts, meat, fish and wrapped in cassava leaf. African do to the slave trade intoduced plantains, bananas and other root vegetables to pasetels. This later spread to the Dominican Republic.
