The terms democratic and republican (unless used to describe the two main political parties of the USA) are not mutually exclusive.

Peru has been a republic since 28 July 1821 when it achieved independence from Spain (which at the time was a monarchy). Peru is a democracy as electors can vote for a variety of political parties (as well as independent candidates) in elections.
