- officially this is the case, but unofficially Pattaya is the second largest city in terms of population - with combined registered and unregistered population somewhere between 0.5m to 1m - supposedly. This is something that you tend to not hear very much about as Thai people tend to downplay it - mainly because they are embarrassed of the city's bad reputation and the fact that a large portion of these 'inhabitants' are expats and not Thais...

Pattaya is one of the FEW officially designated cities in Thailand, Bangkok is the other, most others are simply the metro-center of the province of the same name. Pattaya received more than 14 million tourists in 2019 which is more than many regional Countries, even Australia only gets 4 million tourists per/annum. So yes it's the country's 2nd biggest city by almost any way you'd like to measure it. Phuket has perhaps a better local 'reputation' with Thais as does Chaing Mai, but they are both a fraction of the numbers in the stats when you look at it in reality. Consider this... the Thai Government in 2021 have started an upgrade to the local Pattaya airport to be able to handle 20+ mill passengers/yr and the new Fast Train to Bangkok CBD and the other 2 international airports will begin opperations 2023 whereas Chaing mai might get hooked up by HSR (High Speed Rail) late 2030...
