Athens Greece's landforms consist mainly of mountains considering the fact that they are on the Pindus Mt. range. Athens also have many hills and valleys. In addition to that, Athens was located on a harbor in the Aegean Sea.
Greece is basically a country of mountains and forests, certainly in the times of ancient Athens. There was simply not enough arable soil around Athens to feed its many citizens.
