The reconstruction period was a mess, a nightmare, a fiasco, a debacle, no it was a disaster that was intentional on the part of a few who were out to punish the Rebels and Johnny Reb in every way they could imagine. For the most part the happenings in the South were ignored by well intentioned and fair minded politicians who not only allowed the presence of carpetbaggers and scalawags but profited from their activity # With the freedom granted to the slaves there was a serious labor shortage which could only be eliminated by impossible cash payments from a people who were bankrupt. # Local government and leadership had been replaced by an often hostile military government # The attempted social engineering led to great resentment by the white minority population. As an aside the Reconstruction Era was much like the post Iraqi War period where profit was seen as more important then reconstrution and rehabilitation. The success of the Marshall Plan used after WWII was rejected in favor of exploitation and profit. Perhaps the ancient advise given in Hosea 8:1-14 should have been adhered to in both of these conflicts: "They Sow the Wind, and Reap the Whirlwind". The sheeted night-riders of the Klan are today's roadside and suicide bombers.
