The United States began bombing Taliban sites in Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. This military action was part of Operation Enduring Freedom, launched in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks. The campaign aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power.
Afganistan has had many wars over the centuries. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24th, 1979, and they withdrew ten years later. The Taliban, a fanatical offshoot of Islam supported by the US, siezed control of Afghanistan which then became divided by civil war. In this war the US supported the Northern Alliance (known in Afghanistan as the United Front) in their war against the Taliban, and they liberated a sizable portion of the northern part of the country. After eleven years of fighting the Taliban covertly, the US committed air and ground forces to Afghanistan in 2001, and the Taliban was officially deposed, but fighting in Afghanistan continues.

After the Soviets left Afghanistan, there was a problem with provincial warlords ( think county representative families that control the area with money and influence ) fighting for more control of larger areas of land - causing thousands of deaths. The Taliban formed under the idea of returning to a reigiously prudent country once more. They siezed the South while the "Northern Alliance" owned the north half of the country. Taliban enacted "Sharea Law" and then formed their own Muslim government
