Sometimes.

I only know of Adam Ant's maternal grandfather, Walter "Wally" Albany Smith who did that. It was explained in Adam Ant's Autobiography.

Wally grew up poor, with food being scarce and wearing no shoes on his feet until he turned 18 and joined the Royal Navy during World War I. The worst part of his childhood was his EXTREMELY mean and violent father, who beat him with his huge leather belt and left permanent scars on his back.

Wally knew the outside world wasn't kind to gypsies, but he didn't care. He decided to become a REGULAR Englishman. His "gorger" wife was a nurse. He swept her off her feet, and let her remain a nurse after they married and had children. It took him 3 years to find a job (jobs were scarce after World War I), and he stayed at the job for around 40 years.

I never learned how he was able to avoid being found out about his gypsy heritage, but maybe he lied about his ethnical background so no one would suspect anything.
