Ponce De Leon and De Soto
The two explorers who are credited with the early exploration of present-day Cuba are Christopher Columbus and Juan de la Cosa. Columbus arrived in Cuba during his first voyage to the New World in 1492, claiming the island for Spain. Juan de la Cosa, a Spanish navigator and cartographer, accompanied Columbus on this voyage and later created one of the earliest maps of the Americas that included Cuba. Their expeditions marked the beginning of European interest and colonization in the region.

The early exploration of Cuba primarily aimed to assess its resources and potential for colonization following Christopher Columbus's arrival in 1492. Spain sought to expand its empire, exploit the island's natural wealth, and establish trade routes. Additionally, explorers aimed to convert indigenous populations to Christianity and secure strategic military positions in the Caribbean. This exploration laid the groundwork for subsequent Spanish colonization and exploitation of the region.
