Although families would continue to retain their importance in the new land, the structure of the Hebrew society would expand in numbers and in territory. The nation needed written revelation from their Lord God. As a nation, Israel also needed laws to regulate actions and to preserve freedoms. These laws would not come from man but from God and would be recorded in the Torah, the books of the Law written by Moses. The Torah became a written constitution for the nation of Israel.
