The choice of Jefferson Davis as President of the Confederate States was made on the basis of his experience in government, as a US Senator from Mississippi. He was born, as Lincoln had been, in Kentucky, and eight months older.

There did not seem to be any answer to the weaker position of the South, both industrially and economically. The South lost its largest export market, which was the Northern states. Diplomatically, they could not get any European powers to risk open conflict with the United States. The population ratio also favored the North, with more able-bodied men in their conscription pool. What kept the South in the Civil War was the strategic ability of its generals, along with the spirit of its troops. Fighting mostly on home ground, they were often ill-equipped and outgunned by the Union armies.
