It was a fairly good size place and growing. The gold ships came into the bay and people used the area as a jumping off point for the gold camps further south. It was fairly wide open with plenty of bars and there were gangs who controlled the water front. It was a hard city and very rough. The land size was smaller than it is today, but much of the bay has been filled in and built on.
