In 1776 Commodore Ezekiel Hopkins of the United States Navy captured Fort Montagu in Nassau. He was assisted by Captain John Paul Jones. They took the cannon from Fort Montagu and Fort Nassau and then left. It was again captured in 1782 by Don Juan de Cagagil, the governor of Cuba. The English recaptured it in 1783. After that date, they kept it.
