There are many uses and names for the medium.
I have experimented with squid ink and find it one of my favorite pigments.
Extract ink sacks from squid and collect on a plate.
I wrap the sacks around a chop stick and squeeze out as much as possible into a mortar. cover with cheese cloth to keep insects away and let dry 2 days.
Grind dried ink and mix with medium. Some use linseed oil, egg yolk, etc. I like to just use water.
If using paper the oil will smudge.
Strain before use, if dries add water, flows well with natural charcoal, and earth clays such as red, blues.
Ink picks up small particles of the other pigments and gives a natural look.
This process has been done for over 30 thousand years. Most forget the beauty and stability of the pigments.
Need I mention cave paintings?
