People on the goldfields wore the same types of clothing as that worn by others, according to the traditions of the time. Diggers wore loose-fitting clothes, trousers held up by braces, and long sleeved shirts with the sleeves rolled up. Sturdy leather work boots were an absolute necessity. They usually wore a wide-brimmed hat.

Women who came to the goldfields tended not to work the claims, but even if they did, they did not wear trousers. Women on the gold fields wore the same working clothes as ordinary lower-class city women, and farmers' wives. They wore long skirts which covered their ankles, and long sleeves to their wrists. They had lace-up or button-up bodices and boots.
