Sawtooth mountains
The Alps, in Europe, are 1.2 billion years old.
The Barberton Greenstone Belt in Eastern Africa is the eldest mountain range in the world and is 3.5 billion years old.
Aravalli range are the oldest fold mountain ranges in India
What is the oldest mountain range in the world?
Nearly as old as the Earth, at 4 billion years of age. Sorry no the Canadian Rockies are not 4 billion years old. The Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Canada and United States are the oldest mountain range on earth and they only date 540million to 1.1billion years old. I have no idea how old the Rockies are, but I DO know they are "young" mountain range.
The second oldest mountain range in the world is the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa, estimated to be around 3.4 billion years old. It is known for its ancient rock formations and diverse geology.
Almost all mountains are 'old'. However, geological scientists agree that the Barberton Greenstone Belt in Africa is the oldest mountain range on Earth at 3.5 billion years old.
There have been no recent volcano erruptions in Minnesota (at least not in my life-time). However, during the early formation of Minnesota - a zillion years ago - there was "intense volcanic activity" throughout a large part of Minnesota. See related links for details about Minnesota's volcanic development.
The Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world, estimated to be over 3.5 billion years old. The Canadian Shield in North America is another ancient mountain range, dating back over 4 billion years.
The Mesabi Range in Minnesota was formed over one billion years ago through a process called taconite sedimentation. This involved the deposition of iron-rich sediments that eventually solidified into iron ore deposits due to geological processes like pressure and heat. Subsequent glacial activity also played a role in shaping the landscape of the Mesabi Range.
It is believed that the oldest mountain range is the Appalachians. They formed during the Ordovician Period which occurred about 480 million years ago. The Appalachians run for 1,500 miles and the highest peak is 6.684 feet.
Minnesota has the oldest rocks in the United States. The granitic gneisses of southwest Minnesota have been dated at 3.8 billion years old.
