A commercial Oklahoma gas well reached a depth of 9,583 meters (31,441 feet) and failed to find hydrocarbons but at that depth they discovered molten sulphur which melted their drill bit. It was capped and abandoned. The Kola Peninsula borehole in Russia has far exceeded it in depth (12,000 meters plus) but is an earth science project and not a well.
