Hercules (Greek, Heracles) was made to perform twelve labors. 1) To kill the Nemean Lion whose skin was impenetrable weapons, so Hercules strangled it and wore its pelt throughout the rest of his adventures.
2) To defeat the Lernaean Hydra. This monster had nine heads that grew back every time you cut one off, as well as one invincible head. With the help of Iolaus, Hercules cut off each mortal head, burning the severed neck to keep another head from growing. He buried the last immortal head under a huge rock.
3) To catch (alive) the Erymanthian Boar. Hercules chased it around and around until the boar passed out from exhaustion.
4) To rid the country of the Stymphalian Birds. They had iron wings and beaks. Hercules scared the birds by clashing some cymbals, then shot most of them with his arrows and shooed the rest away.
5) To capture (alive) the Hind of Ceryneia (a deer that was a special pet of Diana/Artemis). It had golden antlers and bronze hooves, and took him a year to track and catch.
6) To capture (alive) the Cretan Bull, a huge black bull that went mad on Crete. He captured and released it, but it was killed later by Theseus.
7) To take the magic Girdle of Hippolyte, Queen of the Amazons. Hercules went with many other heroes and got Hippolyte's girdle quite easily, but Hera (who hated Hercules) told the Amazons that the men were going to kidnap the queen so a battle broke out and Hercules eventually won.
8) To clean the Augean Stables in just one day. There were so many cows and so much junk that nobody thought Hercules would do it, but instead of trying to move the filth, he spent the whole day digging a canal that would divert a nearby river through the stables, clearing away all the junk.
9) To take (alive) the Horses of Diomedes. Diomedes had fed his horses exclusively on human meat, so they were wild and crazy. So Hercules killed Diomedes and his fellows and fed them to his horses which, upon eating their master, became instantly tame.
10) To retrieve (alive) the Oxen of Geryon. Hercules easily killed Geryon and the other defenders of the oxen but he had to bring them back home; in the process he killed two thieves that tried to steal the cattle (and were also Neptune's sons), fought Eryx who stole another ox, and had to gather all the cattle up again after Hera sent a gadfly to irritate and spread them out.
11) To pick the Golden Apples of the Hesperides. He found out where Hesperides was from Nereus (a shape-shifter) by holding onto and not letting go of him until he showed his true form. He also fought Antaeus by holding him above the ground until he died because Antaeus regained strength as long as he could touch the ground. He eventually found the golden apple tree but it was guarded by a fearsome dragon that even Hercules couldn't get around. He had to ask Atlas, who held up the world in Hesperides to get the apples while he held up the world. Atlas would have left Hercules there forever, but Hercules tricked him.
12) To bring back (alive) Cerberus the three-headed guard dog of the Underworld. He successfully wrestled the dog into submission with his bare hands and his labors were done. He went on more adventures even after his labors, but eventually died a fiery death and was brought up to Olympus at the last minute by Jupiter.
The Adventures of Hercules was created in 1983.
