Like any Mediterranean country, Tunisia's weather is the main contributor which decides animal species existing there. The sleeved mouflon, a species of wild sheep, is found in the mountains. Leopards used to abound in Tunisia but are now extinct.

Other smaller mammals include the fennec fox, lynx, red squirrel, dormouse, polecat, large-eyed sandrat, gerbil and jerboa.

Among the marshland regions, birds include egrets, herons, white storks, spoonbills, greater flamingoes, greylag geese, waders and white-headed ducks. There are black-necked grebes, Caspian and gull-billed terns, slender-billed gulls and Audouin's gulls. Birds of prey include long- legged buzzards, black-shouldered kites, ospreys, and marsh and hen harriers. The mountainous areas include southern grey shrikes and moussier's redstarts. Desert areas have coursers, brown-necked ravens, desert warblers, desert sparrows, sandgrouse, houbara bustard and a variety of larks (desert, hoopoe and temminck).

Insects include the standard crawling insects, as well as flies and biting insects such as midges and malaria-carrying mosquitoes.

Reptiles include a variety of tortoises, such as Hermann's Tortoise and small freshwater tortoises suchas pond terrapins. There are more than 30 species of lizards, including geckos, wall lizards, sand racers, sand swimmers and chameleons. There are sand boas and a variety of vipers.
