The city lies within a large valley, and is surrounded by several hills to the north and west. To the south there is a mountainous region of pine and oak trees known as the range of Ajusco, which is prone to snowfalls on winter months. The rest of the city has a subtropical highland climate (Köppen Cwb) with average temperatures of 9-23 °C (42-69 °F).
Agriculture in or around Mexico City is negligible, as the whole valley is mostly urban area; agricultural products include beans, maize and alfalfa; mostly for subsistence. Some ornamental plants are cultivated on the southern area of the city, specially in and around the Xochimilco Ecologic Park.
