The Phoenicians inhabited the coastal region of modern-day Lebanon, Syria, and Israel, which is located in the eastern part of Mesopotamia. They established numerous city-states along the Mediterranean coast, the most famous of which was the city of Tyre.
I would say that the most famous Phoenician would have to be Hiram I of Tyre (980-936 bc). Mentioned in the Bible as a friend and trading partner of King Solomon of Israel. Under his rule Tyre grew to be the most important of Phoenician cities.
For most of their early history the Phoenicians were independent. Then they came under the Seleucid Empire, a Greek state and then the Romans.
