Between 1918 and 1991 Slovenia was part of various forms of Yugoslavia. In 1991 Slovenia fought a 10 day war (and won) against the Yugoslavian (mostly Serbian) army. On May 1st, 2004 Slovenia joined the European Union. On January 1st, 2007 Slovenia started using the Euro as its currency. On December 21st, 2007 Slovenia joined the Schengen zone and opened its borders with other EU countries.
