One of my favorites is the 23rd Psalm. It speaks of the Lords love, care and protection of his people. This psalm is especially comforting to me because as I read it, I am reminded that God not only supplies all of my earthly needs, but has prepared an eternal home for his children as well.

What do psalms reveal about the singer's belief?

AnswerThere was not just one author of the psalms, but many different sources which, in turn, reveal a whole range of beliefs. Some of the psalms reveal that they were to be sung by Jews who believed that God alone was the ruler and protector of the Jews. In some cases, God was believed to be vengeful and to be feared and obeyed, while others display worship and mutual love between God and the faithful.Other psalms reveal an older, polytheistic layer, showing belief in other gods. In some cases, this is apparent because the singer tells us that the gods were defeated by the Supreme God. But even a defeated god is a god, and this involves the singer in belief, if not worship of those ancient gods.

What do Psalms tell us about God?

A:The psalms were meant to be sung, so they tell us more about Jewish worship and belief than about God himself. A discussion in Psalms and Practice (edited by Stephen Breck Reid) defined a psalm as devotional singing, but a singing that goes beyond the song; the psalms preach, teach and pray and are both song and poetry. Some quite early psalms depict God as the chief God in a pantheon of lesser gods - for example Psalm 82, "God standeth in the congregation of the mighty; he judgeth among the gods." Others depict him variously as merciful, vengeful and just. Each psalm is different.

What was the occasion of the book of Psalms?

The occasion of the Book of Psalms was the entire lifetime and experiences of King David. The various Psalms express his prayers, his praises of God, his tribulations and other things during his life. Some of the Psalms were first said by others, but tradition states that it was King David who made all of the Psalms into one Book. If not for him, those psalms authored by others would have been lost.
