New Zealand'sprovincialdivisions are largely geographical only as there are no provincialgovernments within New Zealand any longer. However, there were provincial governments at an earlier stage and they were:
Auckland,
New Plymouth (later to be renamed Taranaki),
Wellington,
Nelson,
Canterbury and
Otago.
Later Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Southland were added. The provinicial governments were effectively disbanded in 1876 and while the names of provinces still remain they are, as has been said, geographical only.
