There are a number of causes. The main ones that come to mind are beliefs and stereotypes. People may feel that one gender is better than the other.

Then some of the things may be biological. Men have more of a push to be more assertive or aggressive based on their neurology and hormones. That of course is not an excuse. Women might not be as interested in certain things and may not defend their right to participate, so when other women are interested, nobody has been defending their right to do whatever.

Then there are sexual politics and basic economics. Girls don't give it up as much as guys do, so that creates competition for a "resource." But men having a stronger sense of sexual need and more aggression may mistreat women in the process of getting what they want. They may reduce women to sex objects as a result.
