The powers of the federal government include the military defence, customs and quarantine, currency, census and statistics, marriage and divorce, copyright, banking regulation, tax, foreign affairs and the like.
In our system, where the commonwealth doesnt have power, that power is vested in the states, so they handle pretty much everything else, including health (though the line is blurred), education, law enforcement and other such issues.
