One of the main events that happened in Sierra Leone was the building of Freetown.
Freetown was created by an African American man called Thomas Peter, who went to England to complain and campaign for a plot of land for freed or escapee slaves to go. He met with the Sierra Leone Company and soon a deal had been made to dedicate Freetown to slaves. Many escapee slaves went there and knew they were safe, and also slaves that had been freed or had bought their way to freedom travelled to Freetown. In 1791, Lieutenant John Clarkson was placed in charge of registering immigrants to take to the new land. When the final 1,100 boarded the 15 boats, they had no idea what was waiting for them at the other side. 64 passengers died en route to Sierra Leone and even lieutenant Clarkson was ill. When they arrived at their destination, some of the left the boat and began to clear a path to their new settlement. They were instructed to clear the land until they reached a large cotton tree in the centre of the land. Upon their arrival at the cotton tree, the new Freetown inhabitants sang and praised the lord for their new land and new life.
The results of Freetown being created on Sierra Leone are large. Today, Freetown is the capital of Sierra Leone and is a major port city and is the centre of the country for business. Without the creation of Freetown, many ex slaves may have stayed have slaves, have been punished or not have lived such a good and safe life.
