KFC claims, in older advertisements, 11 herbs and spices, some published accounts, purporting tests done, claim no more than 3 (msg, salt, and pepper), others claim as many as 7. It should be noted, Colonel Sanders claimed 11 herbs and spices and that changes made, after he sold the business, made the chicken "taste like sawdust." Needless to say, we don't really know for sure.

Col. Sanders' original recipe had 11 herbs and spices, by his reckoning. This was apparently changed after he sold the business, as in his words the new recipe "tasted like sawdust".
