what is it
The purpose of the varna system was to separate the thousands of jati in Indian society that were grouped together into four classes.
Jati is a caste.
The caste of a person depends upon the family one is born in. Kindly note that hindus have two words for division of society. Caste (jati) and Varna. Varna is the inclination with which a person is born with. A person interested in studies belongs to brahmin varna, one proficient in martial arts belongs to kshatriyas, one who is good at business or agriculture is vaishya, and one who gets a salary for working for others is a shudra.
Daun jati
Indo-Aryan society was structured in a hierarchical system known as the varna system, which classified people into four main groups: Brahmins (priests and scholars), Kshatriyas (warriors and rulers), Vaishyas (merchants and farmers), and Shudras (laborers and service providers). This structure was complemented by the jati system, which included numerous sub-castes based on occupation and social status. Social mobility was limited, and individuals were generally expected to adhere to the roles and duties assigned to their varna and jati. Additionally, the society was deeply influenced by religious and cultural practices, with a strong emphasis on rituals and traditions.

The varna or caste system in ancient Aryan society divided people into four main categories: Brahmins (priests and scholars), Kshatriyas (warriors and rulers), Vaishyas (traders and agriculturists), and Shudras (laborers and service providers). This hierarchical structure was based on occupation and duty, with Brahmins at the top and Shudras at the bottom. The system was intended to ensure social order and fulfill societal roles, but over time it became rigid and led to significant social stratification and discrimination. The varna system laid the groundwork for the more complex jati system that developed later in Indian society.
The Jati or Caste System is still very much a part of Indian culture. There are thousands of castes and individuals are expected to be almost as loyal to their Jati as they are to their families. Despite the common belief that there is no Jati mobility, these groups can move up by increasing their economic status and imitating the actions and customs of the higher Jatis.
