Inventions

Ancient Asian Inventions: 3,500 - 1,000 B.C.

1. 3,200 B.C. - Invention of silk fabric. Chinese legends say that the Empress Lei Tsu first discovered silk around 4,000 B.C., when a silkworm cocoon fell into her hot tea. As the empress fished the cocoon out of her teacup, she found that it was unraveling into long, smooth filaments. Rather than flinging the sodden mess away, she decided to spin the fibers into thread. This legend may be nothing more, but certainly Chinese farmers were cultivating silkworms and mulberry trees (for silkworm feed) by 3,200 B.C.

2. 2,500 B.C. - Invention of ink. Prior to the invention of ink, people had to carve words and symbols into stones, or carve stamps of each symbol and then press them into clay tablets in order to write. It was a time-consuming task, and the resultant documents were unwieldy or fragile. Enter ink! This handy combination of fine soot and glue seems to have been invented almost simultaneously in China and Egypt, around 2,500 B.C. Scribes could then simply brush words and pictures onto the surface of cured animal skins, papyrus, or eventually paper, for light-weight, portable, and relatively durable documents.

Inventions of Classical Asia: 1,000 B.C. - 500 A.D.

3. 132 A.D. - Invention of the seismoscope by Zhang Heng, China. China has always been prone to earthquakes. We still can't predict earthquakes with any accuracy, but in 132 A.D., the Chinese inventor Zhang Heng made the first advance in detecting and measuring earthquakes as they happen. His invention, the seismoscope, notified the emperor's court that an earthquake had taken place, and indicated the direction of the epicenter. This would allow court messengers to set out in that direction to assess damage, rather than having to wait for reports to come in from survivors in the earthquake zone.

4. 1413 A.D. - Invention of the ironclad "turtleboat," Korea.Around 1413 - 1415, Korean shipbuilders designed the first turtleboats. These double-masted ironclads were used primarily for ramming pirate ships. Turtleboats came into their own as a weapon of war during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592-1598. Admiral Yi Sun-shin used turtleboats to great effect in the Battle of Hansan-do, helping to defeat the Japanese drive through Korea and toward Ming China. 5. 1980 A.D. - Invention of the Washlet bidet toilet, Japan. The world's most complicated toilets, Japan's option-packed bidets (often called "Washlets" after the original maker's brand) provide the ultimate bathroom experience. Features offered may include: a lid that automatically raises and lowers itself, based on motion detectors; a bidet that will squirt warm or cool water for washing private parts, in a steady stream or pulses; an air-dryer; musical accompaniment to cover the sound of urination; a heated seat; and automatic flush. These bidets are so complicated that foreign users often have trouble finding the flush button.

I don't know if this is correct but inventions also become achievements in our history. - Harry Potter's girlfriend
